Kayaking , and Caterpillar Zoo-

Today I went kayaking again on the river to our new plot site. It was a beautiful day, warm and sunny.

The river here is the color of mud, and the trees are dripping with Spanish moss. Who can tell me what Spanish moss was historically used for? Research it and post a comment, or write about it in your writing notebook.

The mud at the shoreline was thick and sucked my feet in. It was a real workout to pull the kayak on shore and walk 3 feet.

Here is a cool caterpillar that we found. It's in the Geometrid family. What do you think is it's main adaptation for survival? We've been working on the "zoo" (taking care of all the caterpillars), and I have had the opportunity to see many interesting caterpillars.

Talk to you tomorrow!

Hi Ms.Farber,
This is Jade and I was wondering how you are doing. The caterpillar you had in the picture is really cool. Have you found any caterpillars that are furry and that are yellow. Some kids call them two headed mini monsters.

Dear Ms. Farber,
I wish I could see the sights your seeing. Spanish moss was origanally used for mattress stuffing. The catepillar zoo sounds cool.
Have fun.

Sincerely,
quynne

Hi Ms. Farber,
I'm guessing that the caterpillar disguises itself as a stick to help it survive. As for the Spanish moss, Native Americans used the inner fibers to weave bedding floor mats and horse blankets. They also twisted the fiber into ropes used to lash together the pole framework of houses. Dried fibers were used to take scum from cooking.

Hi again!
I think the caterpillar's main adaptation to survival is camofluoge it looks like a stick. And in the picture are the one sticking out your tongue? I hope you see the ghost. Can't wait to here all about it when you come back.

Bye!

hi Mrs.Farber!,
This is Ethan again! I researched the spanish moss thing and I think it was originaly used for starting fires. I think this catipiller's main addaptation is how it lookes like a stick so it would not be harmed by preditors. Hope you still have some more good luck! :)

Dear Mrs.Farber,
I think Spanish moss is historical because a long time ago it started to grow on the trees and so the Indians started to call it tree hair and then some other Indians came and they wanted to call it Spanish beard but that did not last and so other people thought that it was a little childish so they stated t call it Spanish moss. so it is historical for all of the names it had. For the picture of you and the people that you are working with you are the one with your tongue sticking out but it was a little tricky to tell because it was a little bit blurry. I really like how you told us about the haunted hotel that you went to even though you did not see the ghost you will still get another chance to see it. I can't wait to read all about when you will be staying in the hotel again. I also can't wait to hear what you will be writing about next. Hope to read more soon.
Love your friend,
Kaylee

Hi Ms Farber. This is Kimberly and David Woolaver. This is our 3rd try at posting a comment. So goes technology!!!

David said you have found 4 caterpillar families. What makes a caterpillar family? Do any of these families live in Vermont?

David would like to know how many pages of notes do you have for one caterpillar.

Take care and we look forward to hearing about your adventures when you return.
